Guide Valve Dual Seat Design – Ball Valves
September 29th, 2026 by Amanda Schumann
Guide Valve dual seat design PEEK (+20% PTFE) or Devlon primary insert seat plus hard FKM Delta seat. The primary seat acts as a pre-scraper to protect the final seat. As pressure increases, the primary seat engages more tightly for a double-sealing effect. Because there are 2 seats and FKM is more resilient, the tightness on the ball does not have to be as high, reducing torque. A hard primary seat (PEEK plus PTFE has equal flexibility and chemical resistance to Devlon, with superior hardness, scratch and temperature resistance) then a large contact are delta seat ensures long life without leakage. With this design, debris entrapment under the seat is avoided, which can increase valve torque and damage the seat. Consequently, a high safety factor is not required, avoiding actuator over-sizing. With Guide Valve, this is not a “special option” that requires an experiment, prototyping for each size and class slowing delivery as it is built. It is a long proven and tested design standard amongst most of their clients. The torques and performance are trialled and proven. Guide Valve calls this dual seat system their “04 Trim”, which, as it is used for critical service valves, also comes complete with an extra lip seal in the stem. This trim is fire-safe and fugitive emission certified. Please also consider that Guide Valve already offer the 04 trim as standard on all 3P 400NB and over and all sizes of welded body trunnion valves up to 900 class.

This valve is recommended for every valve, as paying a few pennies for a lifetime of trouble-free service is a no-brainer, but especially:
All welded body
All 900 class
All 600 class over 250NB
All 150/300 class over 300NB
All mainline valves
All buried service valves
Non-clean service
Critical service
How how many times has a valve been left on site with the end covers removed, allowing “bull dust”, trench dirt, or pipe debris and rust to get into it? This design may also help out in those situations, although GSL through APV has several dirty service special trim options; click here.
POINTS OF DIFFERENCE
Even the standard trim Guide Valve trunnion ball valve is superior;
- Higher level of fugitive emission tightness certified all sizes and classes with a “real” certificate and drawing for each design variation. Not, “oh we tested one 1500 class that covers the lot” (which is not true as 1500 class has backing seals behind o rings so it is not the same design.
- Firesafe certified API 607 7th/8th with model, witness and drawing numerous certificates to cover all sizes and classes and trims (not API6FA 1999 which even in early 2000’s no one was using except for gate valves.)
- Extra metal seal on stem
- 316 or duplex Spiral wound graphite filled 2nd body gaskets as well as viton o-ring. (Some manufacturers write 316+graphite or 31803+graphite but it is reinforced graphite rope packing off the roll, not integral the type used for gate valves, cut and over wrapped which can leak and also affect the flange tightness and the o-ring seal. Conventional designs just use a soft graphite seal but these only act as a fireseal and, beyond a few bubbles will blow out in higher pressures or even lower pressures in larger sizes if the viton seal leaks. 3 piece valves have double the chance of this happening.
- 350NB and over have an extra body seal.
- 100% owned and run China facility not a JV or outsourced valve, true Canadian design and management.
- Big enough but small enough to care, fast delivery guaranteed, this is why GSL chose Guide Valve as a long term partner.
- API6D monogram is standard not an option, as no 3rd party outsourcing and rebadging even occurs.
